π Ancient DNA Near You
Who lived near your town thousands of years ago? Type a place and see the ancient people whose genomes were sequenced closest to it, with their dates, cultures and haplogroups.
How it works
The map uses the 19,030 dated ancient individuals with coordinates of the Allen Ancient DNA Resource (AADR v66, Mallick et al. 2024), the reference collection of published ancient genomes. For each person you get the burial place, the date (radiocarbon or archaeological context), the archaeological group as named by the study, and the Y-DNA and mtDNA haplogroups when they could be read.
Ancient DNA is very unevenly spread: hundreds of genomes around London, Rome or Vienna, none yet within 100 km of Lyon, Bordeaux or Rennes. So the tool always shows the closest individuals, whatever the distance, and tells you how far they are. A person buried near your town is a neighbour in time, not necessarily an ancestor: to see which ancient peoples your own DNA is closest to, use one of our ancestry reports.
Each line opens the sample page, with the study, the full dates and, when available, the person's ancestry and closest modern populations.
