⚠️ Before you test: most people will match 0 markers, and that is correct

Unlike our Neanderthal Calculator (which finds a signal in nearly everyone of non-African descent), real Denisovan ancestry is essentially absent in Europeans, Africans, Middle Easterners, and most Latin Americans. It is only substantial in Melanesian, Papuan and Aboriginal Australian ancestry (commonly 3-6% of the genome), and present at a much smaller, trace level in some South Asian, East/Southeast Asian and Native American ancestry.

This tool reports a plain marker match count, not a calibrated ancestry percentage like our Neanderthal tool, because a rigorous frequency-calibrated Denisovan panel does not exist yet. A result of "0 of 556" is the expected, correct outcome for the large majority of testers, not a sign that the tool failed.

❓ How do I find my raw DNA file?

Methodology. Markers come from Sprime archaic-segment analysis (Browning et al. 2018, Cell) run on SGDP Papuan genomes, kept only where the site matches the Altai Denisovan genome and mismatches the Altai Neanderthal genome. One high-confidence marker was kept per introgressed segment (556 segments genome-wide). This is a first-pass, non-calibrated panel; unlike our Neanderthal Calculator it does not yet convert matches into a percentage.
