Hesperia

Your Iberian Roots

For people with roots in Spain, Portugal, the Basque Country, Catalonia, the Balearics and the Canary Islands, and for Latin Americans of Iberian descent. We model your DNA against the ancient regional core (the first farmers, the Bell Beaker arrival, El Argar, Celtiberians and Iberians, Roman Hispania, the Visigoths, Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms) and non-regional outside admixture, then show which of 14 communities you most resemble, with an AI narrative.

  • 🏺 Ancient regional core (Neolithic farmers, Bell Beaker, El Argar, Celtiberians)
  • 🌍 Non-regional layer (North African, Levantine, Sephardic proxy, Central European)
  • 🏰 14 Iberian communities compared directly

Hesperia report cover
⚠️ Designed for people with roots in the Iberian Peninsula. Works for any of the 14 communities, from Galicia and the Basque Country to Andalusia, Portugal, the Balearics and the Canary Islands, and for Latin Americans of mostly Iberian ancestry. With strong Indigenous or African ancestry, our Raíces report fits better; for southern France see France Profonde, for Sicily, Sardinia and the islands Thalassa, for North Africa Tamazgha. If you are mostly of other ancestry, the fit will be poor and our Advanced Ancestry Report is a better choice. Not sure? The free Report Finder tells you.

Who it is for

  • Spaniards from every region: Castile, La Mancha, Aragon, Murcia, Andalusia, Extremadura, Asturias and Cantabria.
  • Portuguese, from the Minho and Trás-os-Montes to Lisbon and the Algarve.
  • Basques and Navarrese, the most conservative population of the peninsula.
  • Catalans, Valencians and Balearic islanders, the Mediterranean east coast.
  • Galicians and Canary Islanders, with their own Atlantic stories (Suebi and Guanches).
  • Latin Americans and diaspora families whose DNA is mostly Iberian and who want to know which part of the peninsula it looks like.

Pick the community your family comes from. Not sure, or mixed origins? Choose "Let the model decide" and we compare you to every community automatically.

Galician

Galicia, the Atlantic north-west, once the Suebic kingdom of Gallaecia, with a strong Iron Age castro-culture substrate and very little Andalusi ancestry

Asturian and Cantabrian

Asturias and Cantabria, the mountain north where the Christian kingdom of Asturias was born in 718, with deep continuity and very little North African admixture

Basque

the Basque Country and Navarre, the most conservative population of Iberia, which kept a pre-Indo-European language through the Bronze Age steppe turnover and shows strong continuity since the Iron Age

Castilian (Old Castile, Burgos)

Old Castile around Burgos, the northern Meseta heartland of the Castilian kingdom, close to the early medieval population of Las Gobas

Manchegan (New Castile)

La Mancha and New Castile, the southern Meseta repopulated from the north after the Reconquista of the 11th to 13th centuries, with a moderate Andalusi legacy

Aragonese

Aragon and the Ebro valley, the Celtiberian and Iberian interior, later a Christian crown with a large Mudejar and Morisco population until 1610

Catalan

Catalonia, the Iberian-speaking north-east coast with Greek Empuries, the Visigothic Tarraconensis and the Carolingian Spanish March

Valencian

Valencia, Contestania of the Iberians, then Sharq al-Andalus, resettled by Catalans and Aragonese after 1238, with one of the largest Morisco populations until 1609

Murcian

Murcia, the heartland of the El Argar Bronze Age, then Byzantine Spania and the Andalusi kingdom of Tudmir

Andalusian

Andalusia, the land of Tartessos and of Phoenician Gadir and Malaka, Roman Baetica and the heart of Al-Andalus (Cordoba, Seville, Granada), with the highest North African share of mainland Spain

Extremaduran

Extremadura, Lusitanian and Vettonian land and Roman Emerita Augusta, resettled from Leon and Castile in the Middle Ages (small reference sample)

Portuguese

Portugal, the Atlantic west from Lusitania and Gallaecia to the Gharb al-Andalus, on a north-south gradient of Andalusi ancestry

Canary Islander

the Canary Islands, a mainland Iberian (largely Andalusian and Portuguese) base over the indigenous Guanches, Amazigh settlers who reached the islands around the beginning of the Common Era (the earliest sampled burials are Late Antique), with some West African ancestry

Balearic (Mallorca)

Mallorca and the Balearics, the Talayotic Bronze Age islands and Punic Ibiza, then Islamic Mayurqa, resettled by Catalans after 1229

🌍 Non-regional outside admixture

Even for people fully from the region, we include North African, Levantine, Arabian, Central European, Italian, Germanic, Sub-Saharan, East Asian and Amerindian proxies, so any real outside ancestry is detected honestly instead of being force-fit onto the wrong regional population.

🏰 Community profile

Which of the 14 Iberian communities your DNA most closely resembles, modelled directly against each community's modern reference population.

🧬 Y-DNA & mtDNA lineages

If your raw DNA file is available, we classify your paternal and maternal haplogroups in an Iberian context (e.g. R1b-DF27 and its Basque branch, E-M81, J2, G2a; maternal H3, V, U6).

97 reference populations

How it works, and its limits

🔬 How to read your results (please read)

Your result is computed by genetic similarity (Global25): we place your DNA in a 25-dimension genetic space and find the mixture of reference populations that best reproduces your profile, era by era. Every reference population uses real, official G25 coordinates (published ancient-DNA studies and the official Global25 dataset); none of our reference data is simulated.

Reference populations are statistical proxies: "Al-Andalus" or "Visigothic-period Meseta" means a handful of individuals sampled at a few sites, not a whole people. A North African, Arab or Sephardic-like percentage is a similarity to those samples, not proof of a religion, an ethnicity or a specific ancestor.

Genetics is not identity: this report is not a national, regional or political determination, and neighbouring communities (Castilians and Manchegans, Canary Islanders and Portuguese) can overlap closely in G25, so the closest community is a best-fit estimate.

Why group these 14 communities in one report? They share the same formation story: Neolithic farmers, the Bell Beaker steppe arrival, Iron Age Celtiberians and Iberians, Rome, the Visigoths, eight centuries of Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms, with the Basques preserving the oldest layer.

⚠️ Designed for people with roots in the Iberian Peninsula (including Latin Americans of mostly Iberian ancestry). If you are mostly of other ancestry, the models are calibrated for fully-regional profiles and the fit will be poor.

📖 What is raw DNA & G25?

Frequently asked questions

Who is the Hesperia report for?

It is built for people with roots in the Iberian Peninsula: Spain, Portugal, the Basque Country, Catalonia, the Balearics and the Canary Islands, across 14 communities. Latin Americans of mostly Iberian ancestry can use it too. With strong Indigenous or African ancestry, Raíces fits better, and for other ancestry the Advanced Ancestry Report works better.

Why group Basques, Catalans, Andalusians and Portuguese in one report?

They share the same deep story: Neolithic farmers, the Bell Beaker arrival of steppe ancestry, the Celtiberians and Iberians of the Iron Age, Roman Hispania, the Visigothic kingdom, and eight centuries of Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms. The differences between communities (more Andalusi ancestry in the south, more continuity in the north, the Guanche layer in the Canaries) are exactly what the report measures.

I am Latin American. Does it work for me?

Yes, if your DNA is mostly Iberian: the report shows which part of the peninsula your European side resembles, and the Amerindian and Sub-Saharan proxies catch the rest honestly. If a large part of your ancestry is Indigenous or African, Raíces is built for that mix.

Does it detect North African or Sephardic ancestry?

It measures how much of your profile is best explained by Amazigh, Maghrebi Arab and Arabian proxies (the legacy of Al-Andalus and the Moriscos) and by a medieval Sephardic Jewish proxy. These are statistical similarities to sampled individuals, not proof of a religion, an ethnicity or a specific ancestor.

Not sure it fits me. Can I check first?

Yes. The free Report Finder reads your raw DNA file (or your G25) and tells you honestly whether Hesperia is a good match for you, before you spend anything.

Do I need to have taken a DNA test already?

Yes. Upload your raw DNA file from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA or LivingDNA, or paste your G25 coordinates.

What is the "ancient regional core" in the report?

We model your DNA against Iberian hunter-gatherers and Neolithic farmers, the Bell Beaker people with steppe ancestry, El Argar and the Atlantic Bronze Age, the Celtiberians, Iberians, Punic and Greek colonies, the Hispano-Romans, the Visigothic-period population and the medieval Christian kingdoms and Al-Andalus.

How much does it cost and what do I get?

€15. A full PDF report with your ancient regional core %, non-regional outside admixture breakdown, seven period-by-period breakdowns, closest modern community reference populations, Y-DNA and mtDNA haplogroups (if raw file provided), and a narrative interpreted by Claude AI, in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician, Basque or French.

A DNA report for the Iberian Peninsula

Hesperia is a G25 ancestry report built specifically for people with roots in Spain and Portugal. Upload your raw DNA file from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage or FamilyTreeDNA, pick your community, and we model your genome against the ancient regional core plus non-regional outside admixture, era by era, from the first hunters to the Middle Ages.

Whether you are Galician from the old Suebic kingdom, Basque from the most conservative population of Europe, Castilian from the Meseta, Catalan or Valencian from the Iberian-speaking east coast, Andalusian from the heart of Al-Andalus, Portuguese from Lusitania and the Atlantic west, or Canary Islander with a Guanche legacy: Hesperia models the specific genetic layers of your region's history.

The report uses the Global25 (G25) system developed by geneticist Davidski, placing your DNA in a 25-dimension genetic space alongside ancient and modern reference populations, all sourced from Davidski's official Global25 datasheets and published ancient-DNA studies.
