Balkan Frontier

Your Balkan Roots, Layer by Layer

From Illyrian and Thracian antiquity to the Slavic migration that founded the modern Balkan nations. We model your DNA against the ancient regional core (Illyrian, Thracian, Paeonian, Scordisci Celtic, Proto-Slavic, Roman-provincial Dalmatia/Moesia/Macedonia, Sarmatian) and non-regional outside admixture, then show which of 7 communities you most resemble, with an AI narrative.

  • ⚔️ Ancient regional core (Illyrian, Thracian, Paeonian, Scordisci)
  • 🐎 Medieval waves: Huns, Avars, Slavic migration, Proto-Bulgars, Cumans
  • 🌍 Non-regional outside admixture layer (European, East Asian, Amerindian)
  • 🧬 Y-DNA & mtDNA haplogroup classification

Balkan Frontier report cover
⚠️ Designed for people of predominantly Balkan ancestry. Works for any of the 7 communities: Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin, Macedonian, Bulgarian, and Albanian. If you are mostly of other ancestry, the regional models are calibrated for fully-regional profiles and the fit will be poor; our Advanced Ancestry Report is a better choice.

1. Choose your community

Pick the community your family belongs to. Not sure? Choose "Let the model decide" and we compare you to every community automatically.

Serbian

Serbia, the demographic core of the South Slavic Balkans, an Illyrian/Thracian antiquity beneath the medieval Slavic migration layer

Croatian

Croatia, spanning the Dinaric interior and Dalmatian Adriatic coast, an Illyrian and Roman-provincial core reshaped by the Avar-era Slavic migration

Bosnian

Bosnia and Herzegovina, the mountainous Dinaric heartland where Illyrian antiquity and the medieval Slavic migration layer sit closest together

Montenegrin

Montenegro, the rugged Adriatic-facing core around ancient Doclea, Illyrian and Roman roots beneath a Slavic medieval layer

Macedonian

North Macedonia, the ancient Paeonian and Hellenistic-Roman crossroads between the Balkans and the Aegean

Bulgarian

Bulgaria, a Thracian Iron Age core layered with the Slavic migration and centuries of Byzantine and Ottoman rule

Albanian

Albania, the most direct genetic continuity with Illyrian antiquity of any Balkan community, with Gheg (north) and Tosk (south) regional roots

🔎 Let the model decide (auto)

We detect which community you are genetically closest to.

What your report models

⚔️ Ancient regional core

The deep root shared by Balkan populations: Illyrian, Thracian, Paeonian and Scordisci Celtic (Iron Age), plus Proto-Slavic and Roman-provincial Dalmatia/Moesia/Macedonia.

🏛️ Classical & Roman ancestry

The era that followed the Iron Age for this region: Roman Dalmatia, Moesia and Macedonia, plus the neighbouring Sarmatian steppe frontier, modelled as their own period.

🐎 Medieval waves

The Ostrogothic/Gepid Germanic migration, the Hunnic invasion, Avar Khaganate rule, the Slavic migration that founded the modern Balkan communities, Proto-Bulgars, Cuman-Pechenegs, plus Byzantine and Ottoman layers.

🌍 Non-regional outside admixture

Even for people fully from the region, we include European, East Asian and Amerindian proxies, so any real outside ancestry is detected honestly instead of being force-fit onto the wrong regional population.

🧬 Y-DNA & mtDNA lineages

If your raw DNA file is available, we classify your paternal and maternal haplogroups in a Balkan context (e.g. I2 Balkan Mesolithic, R1a Slavic-migration-era, E-V13 Mediterranean/Balkan Bronze Age).

🇷🇸 Community profile

Which of the 7 Balkan communities your DNA most closely resembles, modelled directly against each community's modern reference population.

52 reference populations

Your DNA is modelled against ancient Balkan proxies, modern community reference populations, and non-regional outside proxies.

Being honest about the method

🔬 How to read your results (please read)

Your result is computed by genetic similarity (Global25): we place your DNA in a 25-dimension genetic space and find the mixture that best reproduces your profile. Every reference population in our panel uses real, official G25 coordinates from published ancient-DNA studies and the official Global25 dataset, none of our reference data is simulated or synthetic.

This is not a national or political determination of identity, and it is not a proof of belonging to any specific community. The Balkans' ethnic and political history is sensitive and complex; this report describes genetic similarity only. Fine distinctions between neighbouring communities can overlap in G25 and are best-fit estimates.

Why group these 7 communities in one report? They share the same deep Iron Age Balkan layers (Illyrian, Thracian, Paeonian, Scordisci antiquity) and, above all, the same defining historical event: the Slavic migration of the 6th-8th century that reshaped the region's population and gave rise to the modern Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin, Macedonian and Bulgarian communities.

⚠️ Designed for predominantly Balkan ancestry. If you are mostly of other ancestry, the models are calibrated for fully-regional profiles and the fit will be poor.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the Balkan Frontier report for?

It is built for people of predominantly Balkan ancestry across any of 7 communities: Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin, Macedonian, Bulgarian, and Albanian. If you are mostly of other ancestry, our Advanced Ancestry Report works better.

Why group these 7 communities in one report?

They share the same deep Iron Age Balkan layers (Illyrian, Thracian, Paeonian, Scordisci antiquity) and, above all, the same defining historical event: the Slavic migration of the 6th-8th century that reshaped the region and founded the modern Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin, Macedonian and Bulgarian communities, alongside the long-continuous Illyrian-descended Albanian community.

Do I need to have taken a DNA test already?

Yes. Upload your raw DNA file from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA or LivingDNA, or paste your G25 coordinates.

What is the "ancient regional core" in the report?

We model your DNA against Illyrian, Thracian, Paeonian, Scordisci Celtic (Iron Age), Proto-Slavic, and Roman-provincial Dalmatia/Moesia/Macedonia (Classical) populations, the archaeological proxies closest to the ancient peoples of the Balkans.

How much does it cost and what do I get?

€15. A full PDF report with your ancient regional core %, non-regional outside admixture breakdown, best-fit ancestry models with their fits, closest modern community reference populations, Y-DNA and mtDNA haplogroups (if raw file provided), and a narrative interpreted by Claude AI.

A DNA report for the Balkans

Balkan Frontier is a G25 ancestry report built specifically for the peoples of the Balkans. Upload your raw DNA file from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage or FamilyTreeDNA, pick your community, and we model your genome against the ancient regional core plus non-regional outside admixture.

Whether you are Serbian, Croatian from the Dalmatian coast or Pannonian interior, Bosnian from the Dinaric heartland, Montenegrin, Macedonian at the Paeonian-Hellenistic crossroads, Bulgarian with Thracian and Proto-Bulgar roots, or Albanian with the region's most direct continuity with Illyrian antiquity: Balkan Frontier models the specific genetic layers of your region's history.

The report uses the Global25 (G25) system developed by geneticist Davidski, placing your DNA in a 25-dimension genetic space alongside ancient and modern reference populations, all sourced from Davidski's official Global25 datasheets.
