This one's for fun, not a formal ancestry verdict, but the data behind it is exactly as real as our other reports.

🃏 This one's for fun, not a scientific identity verdict. Unlike our regional Focus reports, Legend Check is designed as a fun, playful way to poke at your family's favourite stories, at €7 instead of €15. The underlying method (real G25 coordinates, real NNLS math) is exactly as genuine as everywhere else on the site, we're just not asking you to treat the result as a formal ancestry determination the way our other reports are. Most family legends describe a single distant ancestor several generations back, a trace that small can be genuinely undetectable in DNA, that does not make the family story false. A couple of legends (royal bloodlines, Huguenot refugees) are not testable by DNA at all, and we say so plainly rather than faking a result.

One more honesty note: the only way to genetically prove you descend from one specific ancestor is IBD (Identity By Descent), an actual shared DNA segment inherited straight from that person. We can't do that here, we're comparing your DNA to population averages and ancient samples, not to a real, named individual you could share an IBD segment with. So even our best verdict, VERY LIKELY, means "a real, measurable trace consistent with this ancestry", not "proven ancestor confirmed". That's why you'll see VERY LIKELY on the report instead of CONFIRMED.

How a verdict is actually computed

🎯 A specific candidate population, per legend

Each legend is tested against its own real, historically-specific candidate population (e.g. a Viking-era Scandinavian sample, not just "Northern European"), so a verdict can't be confused with ordinary regional overlap.

🌍 A broad worldwide baseline

Alongside every candidate, we include a broad baseline of major world regions, so the model has somewhere else to put the rest of your ancestry rather than force-fitting it onto the legend being tested.

📊 A trace-weight verdict, not a fit score

VERY LIKELY (≥5%), PLAUSIBLE (1-5%, consistent with a single distant ancestor), or UNLIKELY (<1%), based on how much weight the model actually assigns to the candidate population. We say "very likely", not "confirmed", genetic similarity isn't the same as an IBD-proven link to one ancestor (see below).

🔬 How to read your results (please read)

Each result is computed by genetic similarity (Global25 / NNLS): we place your DNA in a 25-dimension genetic space and see how much weight loads onto each legend's specific candidate population versus a broad worldwide baseline. All reference populations used come from Davidski's, Moriopoulos's, and Ajeje Brazorf's published Global25 (G25) datasheets and published ancient-DNA studies, none of our reference data is simulated or synthetic.

A PLAUSIBLE result is a statistical trace signal, not a name, a date, or proof of a specific ancestor. An UNLIKELY result does not prove your family's story is false, it means this particular legend left no detectable trace in this test. Fine distinctions between neighbouring populations can overlap and are best-fit estimates.

Real, provable descent from one specific ancestor is a job for IBD (Identity By Descent) analysis, finding an actual DNA segment you both carry, inherited unbroken from that one person, the kind of thing tools like GEDmatch do between two real, living/tested people. We don't have that here: your candidate "populations" are averages and ancient samples, not a specific individual you could share an IBD segment with. That's exactly why our best verdict reads VERY LIKELY, not CONFIRMED, we're reporting a real, measurable genetic resemblance, never a proven family link.

What is Legend Check?

A DNA report built around the family stories people actually tell, not a region. Every report tests all 14 classic family legends independently against your DNA, with an honest VERY LIKELY, PLAUSIBLE, UNLIKELY, or NOT TESTABLE verdict for each. It's for fun, not a formal ancestry determination.

What does UNLIKELY mean, did the test fail?

No. UNLIKELY is a valid, honest result. Most family legends describe a single distant ancestor several generations back, and that kind of trace can be too small or too diluted for DNA to detect, that does not mean the family story itself is false.

Why are some legends marked NOT TESTABLE?

A few legends, like a secret royal bloodline or a Huguenot refugee ancestor, describe a legal or historical status rather than a distinct population, there is no genetic signal that separates them from their neighbours. We say so honestly instead of pretending to test the untestable.

Do I need to have taken a DNA test already?

Is this a serious ancestry report like your other ones?

It's built to be fun first, not a formal ancestry determination the way our regional Focus reports (Thalassa, Fenghuang, Ararat and the rest) are. That said, nothing about the data is fake, it runs on the exact same real G25 coordinates and NNLS math as everywhere else on the site. We just priced and framed this one as a playful way to poke at family stories rather than a scientific verdict on your identity.
