In 2023 a team led by Tristan Begg sequenced DNA extracted from five authenticated locks of Ludwig van Beethoven's hair, and the results answered two very different questions at once. His genome carries multiple risk variants for liver disease, compounded by a documented hepatitis B infection, a combination that plausibly explains the cirrhosis found at his 1827 autopsy. And his Y chromosome does not match that of five living men who carry the Van Beethoven surname and trace an unbroken paternal line back to the composer's own line, evidence of an unrecorded extramarital paternity somewhere between 1572 and Beethoven's own birth in 1770. Neither finding has anything to do with a separate and much older piece of trivia: that some contemporaries in Bonn and Vienna nicknamed him "der Spagnol". This article keeps the two 2023 findings and the nickname as three separate facts, because collapsing them into one story is exactly the error worth avoiding.

Two findings from 2023, and a nickname that does not belong with them

The liver disease result rests on a polygenic risk score built from variants in PNPLA3 and other loci, placing Beethoven in a high genetic risk category for cirrhosis independent of environment. Combine that with a hepatitis B infection detectable in the sequenced hair and the alcohol use documented by his contemporaries, and the team described a plausible multi factor explanation for the liver failure that killed him. The paternity finding is unrelated and came from a different part of the genome entirely. Y chromosome markers, passed father to son, did not match across Beethoven and five men alive today who share the Van Beethoven surname and a documented genealogical line to a shared ancestor born in 1572. Somewhere in that line, a child was fathered outside the recorded marriage.

The nickname "der Spagnol" is older than either result and comes from an entirely different kind of source: period testimony describing his complexion as darker than his contemporaries expected. That testimony says something about nineteenth century assumptions, not about population genetics. Treating a physical description as evidence for a specific ethnic origin, whether Spanish, North African, or anything else, is itself the outdated premise, not a hypothesis this site tests. What can be checked, and what the rest of this article does check, is the much narrower and better posed question of where Beethoven's own genome actually places him relative to the populations his documented family history points to.

Data and method

Beethoven is represented by the realigned Global25 entry at 95.29 per cent SNP coverage, drawn from the dated ancient sample file and merged first occurrence wins with the standard priority order used throughout this site. Reference populations are modern averages for Germany, Belgium, Flemish Belgium, and the Netherlands, the regions his documented genealogy actually involves. Distances are scaled Euclidean distances multiplied by one thousand, the convention used throughout this site.

One honest note before any number is used. Beethoven is one individual, and every claim below concerns his genome specifically, with the usual risks of individual level noise that a population average does not carry.

Distance ranking

The nearest population in the entire panel is Flemish Belgian, at 21.8 units, which matches the documented origin of the Van Beethoven family in Mechelen before they moved to Bonn. Dutch, Belgian and German modern averages follow within a few points of each other, then French regional populations, Swiss Germans and Austrians. His genome places him exactly where his known genealogy places him: the Rhineland and the Low Countries. No further modelling is needed to make that point, and none is offered here for the nickname, since a physical description is not the kind of claim a coordinate system is built to adjudicate.

What this method cannot say

Two limits, stated before anyone else states them. Beethoven is one individual at 95.29 per cent coverage, and a single genome carries the usual risks of individual level noise that a population average does not. And Global25 has no pigmentation model built into it and was never used here to weigh in on a physical description; the distance ranking above answers a genealogical question about regional ancestry, not a question about complexion, and the two should not be read as standing in for each other.
