Elongated Skulls in Early Medieval Bavaria: DNA, G25 Models, and Their True Origins

Among the most visually striking archaeological finds of early medieval Europe are the artificially elongated skulls discovered in 5th–6th century Bavarian cemeteries. For decades, scholars debated whether these women were local Bavarians, “exotic migrants,” or members of steppe-related groups.

Thanks to the landmark ancient DNA study (Veeramah et al., 2018) and the availability of G25 coordinates, we now know the answer with exceptional precision: these women were not local at all.

1. The Archaeology: Elongated Skulls in Bavaria

Several female burials discovered in southern Germany show cranial deformation, a cultural practice common among Huns, Gepids, Sarmatians, and Danubian populations during the Migration Period.

These individuals appeared in Bavarian cemeteries but stood out anatomically, culturally, and now genetically.

2. DNA Results: They Were Not Bavarian

Autosomal DNA shows that the elongated-skull women have zero local Bavarian ancestry. Instead, they carry large proportions of:

  • Balkan Iron Age / Roman province ancestry
  • Lower Danube / Thracian-like ancestry
  • Steppe-Caucasian (CHG / Iran_N) enriched components
  • Some show clear East Eurasian / Sarmatian signals

Several samples even show affinities to Gepid / Sarmatian / Alan populations, perfectly matching the historical context of population movements along the Danube.

3. Historical Context: Migrations into the Germanic Realm

During the 4th–6th centuries CE, the fall of the Western Roman Empire triggered massive migrations involving Huns, Sarmatians, Alans, Gepids, Goths, and Slavs.

Migrations

Migrations into Central Europe during late antiquity.

These women represent the arrival of Balkan and steppe-associated groups into early Bavarian (Germanic) society—likely linked to marriage alliances, elite exchange, and political integration.

5. Autosomal Interpretation

When modelled with reference populations, the elongated-skull women typically fit as:

  • 40–60% Balkan Roman / Thracian
  • 20–40% Steppe-Caucasian (CHG, Iran_N, Sarmatian-like)
  • 10–20% local Central European (post-marriage admixture)

6. Conclusion

The elongated-skull women buried in Bavaria were:

  • Not Bavarian
  • Not Germanic locals
  • Migrants from the Balkans and the Lower Danube
  • Genetically connected to Sarmatians, Gepids, Huns, and Danubian elites

Their presence reveals the complex web of political marriages, alliances, and migrations that shaped early medieval Europe.
